چکیده

Mitochondrial genomes represent an important data source for phylogenetic analyses. Thirty-seven genes encoding for 13 protein subunits, 2 rRNAs and 22 tRNAs are usually present in a bilaterian mitochondrial genome (Boore, 1999; Wolstenholme, 1992). Additionally, a noncoding control region can be identiWed in most cases, probably bearing the transcription initiation sites. DiVerent rates of evolutionary change between diVerent parts of the mitochondrial genome make them useful for a variety of phylogenetic questions ranging from studies at the population level (mitochondrial control region, cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and cytochrome b, e.g., Liebers et al., 2004) up to the interrelationships of animal phyla (concatenated amino acid alignments of protein-coding genes, e.g., Helfenbein et al., 2004; Lavrov et al., 2005). Besides nucleotide or amino acid sequences other types of characters may be useful in phylogenetic studies, like for instance gene order (e.g., Boore et al., 1995; Roehrdanz et al., 2002), RNA secondary structure (e.g., Macey et al., 2000) or changes of mitochondrial genetic code (e.g., Castresana et al., 1998). Mitochondrial gene order is not stable among Crustacea. Major gene rearrangements involving several proteincoding genes have been reported in copepods (Machida et al., 2002, 2004; Tjensvoll et al., 2005), an ostracod (Ogoh and Ohmiya, 2004), a branchiuran (Lavrov et al., 2004), and among Malacostraca in the freshwater crayWsh Cherax destructor (Miller et al., 2004) and the crab Eriocheir sinenesis (Sun et al., 2005). Taxon sampling regarding complete mitochondrial genomes among Malacostraca remains rather poor. Besides several decapod and stomatopod spe-

Model-based analysis of causes for habitat segregation in Idotea species (Crustacea, Isopoda).

On the shore of the rocky island of Helgoland (North Sea) two closely related isopod species, Idotea balthicaPallas, 1772, and Idotea granulosaRathke, 1843, share a similar fundamental niche but inhabit well-separated habitats. Idotea balthica inhabits floating algae at the sea surface and accumulations of decaying algae on the seafloor, whereas I. granulosa primarily occurs in intertidal macro...

Bacterial communities in the hepatopancreas of different isopod species

This study aims to describe animal bacterial associations with culture independent methods. Bacterial communities in the hepatopancreas of the following 7 species of isopods (Pericaridea, Crustacea, Arthropoda) from 3 habitat types were investigated: 2 subtidal species Idotea baltica (IB) and I. wosnesenskii (IG); 2 intertidal species Ligia occidentalis (LO) and L. pallasii (LP), and 3 terrestr...

Flexible habitat selection and interactive habitat segregation in the marine congeners Idotea

Habitat segregation among competing species is widespread yet very little is know how this is achieved in practice. In a case study, we examined short-term effects of conspecific and congeneric density on habitat selection in two competing marine isopod species, Idotea emarginata and Idotea baltica. Under semi-natural conditions in large outdoor cylindrical tanks (4 m high; volume 5.5 m), anima...

Isolation and characterization of microsatellite markers from the marine isopods Serolis paradoxa and Septemserolis septemcarinata (Crustacea: Peracarida).

This study reports the successful isolation of highly informative microsatellite marker sets for two marine serolid isopod species. For Serolis paradoxa (Fabricius, 1775), 13, and for Septemserolis septemcarinata (Miers, 1875), eight polymorphic microsatellite markers were isolated using the reporter genome enrichment protocol. The number of alleles per locus (N(A) ) and the observed heterozygo...

On the physiology of melanophores in the marine isopod, Idotea japonica. I.

Since Matzdorff (1883) found that the color of Idotea tricuspidata altered in response to conditions of background, a number of experiments have been carried out concerning the chromatophore physiology in isopods. There workers were unanimous in concluding that the chromatophores of isopods showed background adaptation, and, that some species showed diurnal rhythm in melanophore condition. It h...
